In 2015, BT announced plans to stop the purchase of ISDN lines in 2020 and to officially switch off ISDN in 2025. Surprisingly in the football world ISDN is very much still in use with TalkSport, Sky Sports, BBC, Home, visiting clubs and more. All utilising ISDN to provide matchday commentary. With Posh securing promotion to the championship after Jonson Clarke-Harris’ 96th-minute penalty saw them come from 3-0 down to draw with Lincoln EFL regulations required Peterborough United to provide ISDN connectivity to visiting clubs. Much to our surprise having successfully migrated numerous customers over to IP solutions, we provided our first ISDN connectivity in years to the Weston Homes Stadium.
Three years on, after a 2-1 success over Doncaster Rovers at the Weston Homes Stadium with Harrison Burrows and Ephron Mason-Clark on target, Posh moved into round three of the Emirates FA Cup facing Leeds United. The fixture scheduled to be live on BBC 5 Live. On the Thursday before the Sunday fixture, Smart Solutions were contacted due to an issue with BBC Radio 5 Live’s ISDN line at the Weston Homes Stadium. Whilst not supplied by ourselves, Smart Solutions arranged to meet BBC 5 Live on the Friday to implement connectivity to the BBC equipment via IP the replacement for ISDN. Upon meeting the BBC, Smart Solutions worked to configure connectivity with their Salford hub and successfully completed tests ahead of the Leeds fixture ensuring QoS and SD-WAN was configured for flawless connectivity. This marked a significant milestone in the move from ISDN to IP with Posh being early pioneers in the switchover amongst EFL clubs.
Match Days are a good test on the Weston Homes Stadiums infrastructure especially with high profile fixtures and sell out attendances. Becoming a cashless stadium in 2021 reliance on IT infrastructure increased significantly with Ticket Master Turnstile entry scanners, Club Shop, Ticket Offices, Hospitality food and catering, Corporate areas, Media, Control Room operations and CCTV all relying on this critical infrastructure. Despite an unfortunate result on the pitch all systems remained functional allowing for a smooth match day operation.
